SAUBAUM: THE RESISTANCE TREE (Oberfeistritz, Austria)

2025 Seven years after its installation, 'Saubaum' remains a permanent part of the Oberfeistritz landscape, its copper structure acquiring a natural patina, evidencing the enduring presence of local history and the artwork itself.
SAUBAUM: THE RESISTANCE TREE (Oberfeistritz, Austria)
Commissioned in 2018 by the Saubachkult Club in Oberfeistritz, this site-specific installation carries unique institutional value, as the artist was the sole non-Austrian invited to participate in the then-biennial series.
The work is built around a German pun (Sau / Pig and Baum / Tree) and functions as a historical allegory. It references the post-WWII period when villagers hid their livestock from occupying Russian troops. Crafted from copper piping and epoxy resin, the sculpture uses the apple tree (native to the region) and conceptual red pigs to emphasize a powerful message of local resistance and material endurance.
Encargada en 2018 por el Club Saubachkult en Oberfeistritz, esta instalación de sitio específico posee un valor institucional único, ya que el artista fue el único no austríaco invitado a participar en lo que entonces era una serie bienal.
La obra se basa en un juego de palabras en alemán (Sau / Puerco y Baum / Árbol) y funciona como una alegoría histórica. Hace referencia al periodo de posguerra, cuando los habitantes del pueblo escondían su ganado de las tropas rusas ocupantes. Elaborada con tubería de cobre y resina epóxica, la escultura utiliza el manzano (nativo de la región) y los cerdos rojos conceptuales para enfatizar un poderoso mensaje de resistencia local y perdurabilidad material.
THE TRANSLATED STREET / TARAHUMARA PRESENCE (Frohnleiten, 2023)
THE TRANSLATED STREET / TARAHUMARA PRESENCE is a site-specific installation exhibited in the Narrenkastl vitrine on the main square of Frohnleiten, Austria. The work conceptually transports a harsh social reality from Northern Mexico to the quiet Austrian public sphere.
The installation focuses on the indigenous Tarahumara people who travel from the mountains to cities in Mexico to ask for money. It contrasts the traditional, colorful dress of the Tarahumara with the urban scene of street begging.
The components include a mixed media collage of a begging scene in Gómez Palacio; traditional objects such as a woven palm-leaf basket, Mexican coins, and a colorful carrying fabric; and the display itself, which was visible throughout September 2023.
This project stands as an act of conceptual transfer, using the Austrian display case to frame a complex issue of cultural displacement and poverty.
THE TRANSLATED STREET / TARAHUMARA PRESENCE es una instalación de sitio específico exhibida en la vitrina Narrenkastl en la plaza principal de Frohnleiten, Austria. La obra transporta conceptualmente una dura realidad social del Norte de México a la tranquila esfera pública austríaca.
La instalación se enfoca en el pueblo indígena Tarahumara que viaja desde las montañas a las ciudades en México para pedir dinero. Contrasta el vestido tradicional y colorido de los Tarahumaras con la escena urbana de la mendicidad callejera.
Los componentes incluyen un collage de técnica mixta de una escena de mendicidad en Gómez Palacio; objetos tradicionales como un cesto tejido de hojas de palma, monedas mexicanas, y una colorida tela tradicional para cargar bebés; y la propia vitrina, que estuvo visible durante todo septiembre de 2023.
Este proyecto se erige como un acto de transferencia conceptual, utilizando el expositor austríaco para enmarcar un complejo tema de desplazamiento cultural y pobreza.
